My Process

I use extruded coils to hand build my pots. Clay slip is used to hold the coils together. I smooth everything out with wooden tools and build up my form layer by layer. When the pot is completely built I apply five layers of black underglaze, then I use a needle tool to incise the designs. I draw the large elements first, and fill in the background with smaller elements, always thinking about positive and negative space and the flow of the design. Next I use different sized tools to carve out my designs - this technique is called sgraffito (sgraffito comes from the Italian language and means “to scratch”). When the pot is complete, it drys slowly over a few weeks and is then fired in a kiln. The surface is finished with a few layers of wax for a soft matte finish.

About

As a ceramic artist, I enjoy creating art that combines the techniques of drawing, sculpture and mixed media. I think of my artwork as a celebration of the beauty of the natural world! My goal is to translate the joy I feel in nature by using images of birds, flowers, plants and insects in a lively, rhythmic composition.

Engaging with nature through art not only deepens my understanding and appreciation of its beauty, it also fosters a sense of reverence and responsibility towards the environment.

Ultimately, my hope is that my art will serve as a reminder of the incredible beauty and diversity of the natural world, and inspire others to appreciate and take care of our planet. Through a collective mindset of love and kindness, both towards nature and each other, we can assure that the wonders of the natural world remain for future generations.
